Queer the Land Book Club: Emergent Strategy
Hosted by Queer the Land
Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds is a nonfiction book by writer and activist Adrienne Maree Brown. Published in 2017 this text has become an informed reference for grassroots activists nationwide.
Emergent Strategy is the foundational text for Queer the Land due to its diverse array of topics, including activism, spirituality, and social justice; drawing inspiration from elements of the natural world, Adrienne Maree Brown explores an adaptive, collaborative, interdependent, nonlinear, iterative, resilient, and imaginative approach to social justice work, and encourages all members of society to co-create a world that is just and sustainable through small, everyday interactions. Emergent Strategy is a consistent conversation on the interconnectedness of our world, and QTL aims to put this guide into practice with the Emergent Strategy book club.
Queer the Land is a collaborative grounded in the self-determination of queer, transgender, and Two-Spirit, Black, Indigenous/people of color (QT2BIPOC), with the vision of resisting displacement, collectively stewarding land, and owning our labor. This is our 7th year of grassroots organizing, and it only makes sense to use this year to re-engage our collective values and reassess our path forward.
Each month, we will engage with a chapter of Emergent Strategy through different platforms to explore accessibility, engage broader audiences, and build on our values of interconnectedness by collaborating with value-aligned businesses and organizations that want to explore this text within a community setting.
This month QTL's Emergent Strategy Book Club is collaborating with Parable, a Black queer parent-owned bookstore in Tacoma, on Sunday, May 5th, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. This offering is free, and the first 5 participants to register will receive a free copy of Emergent Strategy! Register at tinyurl.com/QTLBookClub

"Cliterature" Book Club
Book Club for Queers hosted by Cliterature
rescheduled from January
Are you ready to read a new book with us? This month’s book is The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith! We’ll be discussing it on February 19th. Thank you to our friend Erika for her exciting description of this book 🥰
“’The Price of Salt’ by Patricia Highsmith is an utterly foundational work of queer literature. At a time when publishers required any lesbian stories to end in tragedy, ‘The Price of Salt’ bucked that trend and portrayed a truly happy ending for its sapphic lovers. While it might read a little differently to what we’re used to today, the novel is still immensely valuable as a cultural artifact, and is absolutely still relevant to modern audiences.
This is made evident by the book’s incredible 2015 cinematic adaptation, ‘Carol’, which is also absolutely worth your time. It has Cate Blanchett’s perfect, golden head dipping between another woman’s legs, what more could you want? Subtly masterful cinematography depicting the struggles and hidden joys of being gay in the 50’s? Well, it has that too. Enjoy 💜”
